The hotel has a lovely atmosphere and a stunning view. Housekeeping tidied my room daily and was very thorough. During my seven-day stay, though, the bed sheets weren't changed, and the instant coffee and tea sachets weren't replenished. I would expect that service at a five-star hotel, so it needs improvement.

The kitchen was a real highlight. With half board, we could choose nearly anything on the restaurant menu, with three courses each evening, and everything was delicious. This smaller hotel has a familiar feel, but still offers plenty, including a spa, billiards, a nice pool, terraces, and a garden. It’s up in the hills of Funchal beside the Monte Sledges road, with wonderful views of the city and ocean. A great place to spend a few days off.

I found the review card while unpacking and wanted to say how much I enjoyed our visit to Quinta Mirabela. The birthday cake was a lovely surprise, beautiful to look at and delicious too. Thanks to the pastry chef! My daughter had hoped to use the pool, but the weather and timing meant we never made it there. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful. Reception assisted us on several occasions and gave useful advice about places to visit around the island. We also had a fabulous dinner at the restaurant, where the staff made the evening special. I hope to come back someday.

The views from the hotel are phenomenal, and the rooms were clean and very nice. The staff were attentive and the food delicious. Still, I badly underestimated how far the centre was and, even more, how steep the roads are. I'm fit, but those hills make getting around on foot really difficult. There is a courtesy bus twice a day, six days a week, and it felt essential unless you have a car or take the local bus, which is a short but steep walk away. If I went to Funchal again, I'd book somewhere in town.
