Residencial Funchal

The location is very central, right across the street from Mercado dos Lavradores, so getting around was easy. The room was cleaned daily, the bed made, and towels changed. They even folded my pajamas! The kitchen came in handy after long hiking days when we were too tired or didn't feel like eating out. Self check-in and check-out were convenient. Great value for the price. The bed wasn't comfortable, the shower leaked, and there was a moldy smell at the entrance, though the room itself was clean.

If you're after a cheap stay in Funchal with a great location, this place could work. It's right across from the market and a couple of minutes' walk from most buses, including the airport bus. Location is definitely its selling point. It's very much hostel-like accommodation. The rooms are old and dated, and could use better mattresses and bedding. There's no fan or air conditioning, so it stayed uncomfortably warm until after nightfall even with the windows open. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful when they were there, though they arrived later in the morning and left relatively early. Guests can use a small shared kitchen on the top floor.

The room was in noticeably worse shape than the photos online, and the bed setup was different from what the listing promised. It said there would be one double bed and one single, but we found only a double. When we raised this with Juan, the manager, he apologized but offered no compensation. I can’t recommend the place.

We were given a room on the top floor with our own bathroom, and the kitchen was right beside us. The people were lovely, and our bed was made every day. The kitchen could’ve been cleaner and better organized, but we had a good stay. Great location, too.
