Doubletree By Hilton Lagoa Azores

One thing to know before booking: a new hotel is being built directly in front of part of the property. If your room looks onto the construction, you might hear daytime noise even with the windows shut. I think guests should be told about this when booking. Apart from that, I had a wonderful stay at the DoubleTree. The service was great, the rooms felt spacious and comfortable, and the new hotel was beautifully kept. I also enjoyed the spa, which costs €10 for regular guests or €5 for Hilton members. I visited in winter, so I didn't try the rooftop pool, though it looks like it would be lovely in warm weather. I'd happily come back.

The rooftop bartenders really know their cocktails, and I enjoyed a couple of nightcaps there. I skipped the restaurant by the lobby, though. My room had the sea and mountain view, and both were great. A few nights I left the balcony door open and drifted off to the sound of rain. The bed was super comfortable, and the room itself was nice. Everyone on staff was friendly and helpful. This was easily my best stay at a Hilton, and I can't picture choosing somewhere else on São Miguel. It's a comfortable base for exploring the island.

The hotel is new and in good shape, with convenient parking and comfortable, well-furnished rooms. The bathroom even had marble. Still, it felt too American for us. If you want a more authentically Azorian stay, we'd suggest choosing a local hotel. We also weren't happy with the check-in response when we asked about switching rooms. We've visited Sao Miguel several times and have sometimes asked elsewhere for a room with a better view or more convenient location without trouble. Here, they quoted an extra 50euro a night. No thanks!!!

We could walk from the hotel to the sea, little cafes, and shops, which was great. We also got to use the spa and gym. The room was comfortable and had a phenomenal view, and the lobby smells amazing. The elevators were quick, too. The trip was a travel special, so we didn't know what to expect, but the front desk team was friendly and offered restaurant and scenic spot suggestions. At Mistico, rooftop bartenders Sylvia and Leandro made delicious cocktails. The food didn't impress us as much, though it was fine and decently priced. The Doubletree cookies tasted a little different from the ones in the US. We'd recommend staying here.
