Monte da Casteleja

My in-laws had a really enjoyable, interesting afternoon at Monte Da Casteleja vineyard. I bought them two tickets as a gift while they were staying in Lagos, about a 15-minute taxi ride from their hotel. The experience lasted two hours. They enjoyed three glasses of wine with local bread and meats. The hostess knew a lot and told them about the vineyard's history and why they produce without chemicals. We first tried the wines at a wonderful meal at Loki, then booked a tasting a few days later. Monte da Casteleja is a small family winery just outside Lagos, easy to reach but tucked away in its own little world. Carlos, the owner's son, greeted us and had set up a table for us in the barrel room with bread and snacks to go with the wine. He was a fantastic host, explaining the wines and pairings and letting us wander around the farm between glasses. The whole visit felt charming and much more intimate than many vineyard tastings. If you'd like a peek behind the scenes at a small winery and the chance to taste and buy some exquisite wines, this is the place. I'd recommend it and would come back.

The food was nice, and the German girl knew a lot about the wine on the tour. But we were so excited for this tasting and couldn't believe €90 got us just three tiny quarter glasses. When I asked for a little more of the one I liked, she gave me an angry look and poured only a tiny dribble. The other guests also said how strange it was to get so little wine at a wine tasting.

The wine and atmosphere were just perfect. Thank you, Carlos, for such an amazing wine tasting. You're young but so experienced, knowledgeable, and deeply grateful for your family's craft. I wish I could've bought more to ship back to Canada. Thanks for the hospitality and hugs.
