The restaurant and bar were a hit with us, and the service was excellent. The hotel sits in the enchanting Buçaco forest, among ancient trees, mossy stone walls and natural springs said to have flowed since 1866. Water features cascade down stone stairways through the trees, making a walk there feel like a fairy tale. Staying here feels like being let into a living museum, not checking into a modern hotel. It's been kept in its original Belle Époque style, with detailed woodwork, beautiful marble bathroom craftsmanship and single-glazed windows that show its age. Some may call it outdated, but to us it feels irreplaceable, since modernizing it would take away some of that authenticity. This isn't a place for sleek modernity. It's for people who love history and atmosphere, and the unusual chance to sleep inside living heritage. We left feeling like guests from another century.

Pure rest, surrounded by stunning nature, in an exceptional castle. It was a privilege to stay here, the place is stunning and feels like time travel to the Belle Époque. We had a great room, great food and kind staff, with excellent service. Amazing value for a surprisingly low price. I'd definitely recommend it.

The palace stands in the middle of Mata do Buçaco forest, inside a vast walled park planted by the Order of Discalced Carmelites in the 17th century. Hundreds of exotic tree species from around the world grow there, alongside quiet fountains and winding paths to hidden chapels and striking viewpoints. Bussaco Palace Hotel is a beautiful neo-Manueline building, with stone carvings, grand arches and azulejo panels showing the Age of Discovery. It was originally built as a royal hunting lodge for Portugal's last Kings.

The restaurant was very good and the food delicious. The hotel looks impressive from the outside and the location is amazing, but it doesn't feel like a 5-star hotel, maybe 3 stars. The room furniture is very old, the rooms are small, and there's no air conditioning or mini bar.

We were all very disappointed with this outing. The gardens weren't nearly as magnificent as the pictures made them look, and there were a lot of dead shrubs. The grounds are beautiful, no doubt, but we had to pay €7 just to enter. They wouldn't let us eat at the restaurant because a wedding was scheduled. Why wasn't that mentioned before we paid to get in?
