Luz is a small, pleasant resort town that feels manageable rather than like the big tourist hotspots, and there’s still plenty to do at the beach. We stayed in privately rented rooms in a house, so this isn't a hotel. The accommodation was clean and quiet, with free parking there, and the free beach parking lot is just a three-minute drive away. I hesitated at first about staying somewhere like this, but I didn’t regret saving nine euros compared with a traditional local hotel. That would even cover a tasty meal at a local pizzeria. Our hostess, Luiza, speaks very little English and no German, as far as I could tell, but we managed, and she was certainly hospitable.

You can walk to Luz in about eight minutes. It's a simple guesthouse, with bright, spacious rooms and a good breakfast.
