Hotel Enotel Santo da Serra

The service issue really soured our stay. One evening we brought back fruit and a small cake and asked for a knife and a few spoons. The request was firmly refused, and when the receptionist checked with the restaurant, they said no as well. We weren't given even basic cutlery. We travel often and have never run into this before. It felt unacceptable and left a bad impression. That was a shame, because we enjoyed the three nights in many other ways. The property is beautiful, the room was comfortable, and breakfast was delicious. The pool, Turkish sauna, and convenient parking were all good too.

A peaceful, comfortable place with really clean facilities, friendly people, and excellent food. The pool and sauna were great, and there’s free parking and good Wi-Fi. It’s close to the airport and a handy starting point for exploring the island by rental car. A welcome escape from the noise of Funchal. Would happily come back sometime 🫠🫠🫠

The dampness was the main issue for me. There was a musty smell, and our clothes felt moist; even swimsuits left hanging didn’t dry. I’ve traveled extensively and haven’t experienced air this damp before, almost like a constant mist. We stayed Sept 10-12. The room was clean, the hotel was fine, and breakfast was decent, though neither stood out. The staff were absolutely lovely and helpful. After seeing the island, I’d suggest staying in or near Porta do sol, where it’s sunny and warm and the roads are easy to drive, or in Funchal proper.

We felt a bit ripped off. We booked directly on the hotel website at a last minute price, after filtering for two people, but on arrival were told the booking was for one. The receptionist blamed us, while also saying we weren’t the first that month and that the site wasn’t very good. It seems misleading to filter for two repeatedly and still end up with a one person booking. We expected the discounted price, but instead had to pay €120 more for two nights. For that amount, we could have booked a nicer hotel nearby. A little understanding or a small compensation would have been enough, but he kept insisting it was our fault and brushed off our suggestion to raise the website problem with his superiors. We booked directly, not through booking.com, though we’d suggest booking that way since it seems much more reliable.
