Casa do Comendador

Patricia, the original Comendador’s great-granddaughter, has made her great-grandparents’ home into a warm, inviting B&B. With all the original expensive furniture in place, the house feels as if its owners have just stepped out, and gives you a glimpse of how rich Portuguese families used to live. I loved the decor and view, and breakfast in the original dining room was a treat. Breakfast was great too, with homemade jams and marmalade and excellent coffee from a 2018 machine. There’s a great bathroom and lots of space. My one complaint was the bed, which felt like an instrument of torture for a tall Dutchman. The proprietor promised she’d find a bed to fit me next time, so I’ll definitely return for that and the hospitality. I’d recommend booking here if you’re going to Manteigas. If you need a restaurant reservation, ask the owner. She got us a table on carnival Sunday, which wasn’t easy.

The historic little objects around the house make it a poor fit for small children, but all the old furniture creates a really unusual atmosphere. The staff were friendly, though they speak only Portuguese. A very special place.

A lovely house to stay in while visiting Manteigas.

What a lovely surprise. Stepping through the door felt like entering another century, full of splendor and refinement. I had a fantastic experience and was able to relive childhood memories while respecting a magnificent history. The room was in excellent condition, and the service was warm, empathetic and friendly. Breakfast was excellent, with regional products and magnificent peaches grown there. The spring water pool was fantastic, with a beautiful view. It’s ideal for peace, quiet and a touch of another era. The Comendador shop is so charming and different, with a varied, original, high-quality selection. Wonderful days here. Thank you, we’ll be back, and I recommend a visit.
