The visit gave me much more than I expected from a stop to shop for my company. I saw the land, farm, house, distillery and setup, and sampled the essential oils. Over coffee and chocolates, Francois and I had a conversation that was engaging and inspiring. He shared the life’s work of a Belgian expat and his successful, environmentally responsible company, and gave me a scent sampling of his oils before filling, labeling and boxing them for me. Francois is deeply committed to restoring local plant life. He uses the leftover plant material from distilling as compost to strengthen native oak trees struggling with climate change. He also grows, harvests, distills, bottles, labels and ships very high-quality essential oils for the select few who understand their value. He’s what I’d call an ally. Call ahead to make an appointment.

We came as a family in late August, hoping for four or five quiet days away from everything, and that’s what we got. Francois was a great host, full of information and committed to doing things in an environmentally friendly way. He made breakfast for us each morning, and even cooked me an Irish breakfast for my birthday. We loved the place and had a wonderful time. A great spot for a getaway.

Visited eight years ago. The views were stunning and the place was spectacularly quiet, but the owner’s attitude left me disappointed. We were the only guests, and it felt like he wasn’t happy we’d arrived. We felt like intruders. We’d planned to eat in Mertola, but were sort of talked into having dinner at the Herdade instead. I’m easy about food, but the price he charged for spaghetti and salad was the issue. The wine bottle cost 5€ at the village shop, and an authentic Alentejo meal in the small restaurant would have been much cheaper. It’s a shame we weren’t made welcome, because the place has so much to offer. It could have been heaven on earth.

A great place to unwind, far away from everything.
