The room was freezing when we arrived around 1 p.m., and they hadn’t turned on the heating during the February storm. Two small radiators couldn’t warm such a high-ceilinged room, even over two and a half days, so we couldn’t sleep at night. The single-pane window let in cold, noise, and rainwater, which seeped beneath it into the room. To switch off the light, you have to go back to the door and find your way in the dark. The house smelled damp and musty. The prices were exorbitant, coinciding with a Friday the 13th event that was later canceled because of rain. A disastrous place, absolutely not recommended.

I arranged a provisional booking directly with the owner by phone. She said she’d let me know the rental price for the next Friday the 13th, but when I tried reaching her by phone and email, I got no reply at all. I don’t find her reliable.

I’d booked two rooms through Booking well ahead of time for a Friday the 13th, when Montalegre is in high demand. Not long before the date, the owner abruptly told me she was canceling because she needed the rooms for family. It showed no professionalism or respect for customers. I certainly wouldn’t recommend staying here.

We were just passing through and stayed one night at Casa Zé Maria, but it turned out to be a really lovely stop. The decor and comfort made for a surprisingly nice experience, and the young woman who welcomed us was so friendly and helpful. We highly recommend it.

The stone walls were such a surprise, and I loved the shower. The place was pretty and clean, with quality accommodation and an excellent breakfast. They hadn’t switched on the heater overnight, but I didn’t feel cold.
