They kindly held my backpack while I went to the beach, but the overbooking turned into a complete mess. I arrived at 22:00 and waited around 30 minutes while they kept telling me “five minutes.” The reception staff mostly talked among themselves about what to do and didn't seem very concerned that I was tired and it was already 10 pm. They said the whole hostel was full and there were no beds, then later asked if I wanted a private room. Why didn't they offer that to the couple instead? They had been sleeping in separate beds in the room I was supposed to have, but ended up sharing one small mattress on the floor so I could get a bed. Even if they agreed, it was weird, absurd, and very unprofessional for staff to allow it. The overbooking wasn't our fault. They should have found me another hostel or provided another bed, regardless of any price difference. I've worked in hotels, and that's standard practice. I'm pretty sure they didn't change my sheets either. They were crumpled, like someone had already slept in them. By then it was late and I was exhausted, so I just went to bed. My bed was right beside the couple on the floor. The hostel itself was rough. The kitchen looked dirty and the fridge was packed with food. It's far from everything except the train station. The beds were bad, the mattresses very thin, and the sheets and walls stained. Rooms were smelly and crowded, and the old toilets were wet. There are only three bathrooms in the whole hostel. It was hot, with lots of noise outside, so we had to leave the main window open. There was just one small fan for the whole room, and I was supposedly in one of the good rooms. I've travelled a lot around Europe, stayed in plenty of cheap hostels, and just finished El Camino Frances, mostly using municipal albergues. I've never had anything like this. The online pictures don't match what you'll find, so I'm attaching current ones for reference. It felt more like a brothel than a hostel. I booked in a hurry without reading the reviews, and I won't make that mistake again. Booking should take this place down from its site.

Sunrise Hostel is right in the heart of downtown, handy for exploring the main attractions. Public transport and restaurants are nearby, and you can walk to major sites. The common areas, dorms, and bathrooms are cleaned several times a day, and the hostel keeps a high standard of cleanliness. The manager and team work hard to make the place friendly and welcoming, and the staff are helpful, friendly, and multilingual. For its central location and amenities, it offers great value. I’m grateful for a memorable stay.

I've stayed in hostels around the region for more than six months. I really wanted to give this place five stars, and even applied to volunteer here, but wasn't accepted despite my experience in digital marketing and customer experience. I don't feel safe keeping my phone or wallet on my bed. Things seem to get stolen left and right. Last night my charging cable fell to the floor, and by the time I noticed, it was gone. Two pairs of my flip-flops have also disappeared. I'm really disappointed that the manager turned down my offer to help. I told them several times the place seemed understaffed and I'd be happy to pitch in. Whether it was because of language skills or something else, I guess I'll never know.

For 100€ a night, I expected better. The pots and pans were greasy, with food stuck to them, and the coffee machine smelled awful and had mold in it. There was no way to boil water. When I raised the issue, staff said, “The other guests did it,” and seemed not to care. Easily the most disgusting hostel in Portugal. Don’t come here.

I spent three weeks at HYH and came away grateful for the people there. I was going through a rough time and dealing with a difficult situation, and the manager and staff handled it professionally and supported me. They’re friendly, and they make sure guests feel safe. It’s a busy, well-used hostel, and the price is the best deal in town. You get what you pay for, so look elsewhere if you want luxury and are willing to pay luxury prices. For travelers on a budget, it does the job. Thanks, Carol and everyone. Hope I get to see you again.
