Casa Matriz Séc. XVI

A well-equipped alojamento local at a reasonable price, set in a 16th century building across from a 16th century church.

The upstairs terrace is open to all guests and has lovely views, and the town center is only a short walk away. We were very happy with our spacious, clean two-bedroom apartment at Casa Motriz. The kitchen is basic but has what you need, and the bathrooms have showers with separate toilets. It’s a charming historic house, inside and out. There’s no reception desk or staff member, just a code sent for the main entrance and your room. We found the system confusing at first, and with nobody there it was easy to feel a bit lost. A sweet treat waiting by the door was a lovely touch. Coffee, tea, and filtered water to refill are available downstairs. The hosts were friendly and attentive, and we really enjoyed our couple of days in Penafiel and the surrounding area.

Casa matriz feels like a second home to me, somewhere for holidays and weekends. It’s comfortable, clean, and sophisticated, as well as very well located. If you’re after some rest, or want to explore the lovely city of Penafiel and the surrounding area, I recommend Casa as a place to stay or a little retreat.

We’ll always be grateful to Sra. Lidia Menezes. When our daughter needed emergency surgery, she was incredibly understanding and gave us all the support we needed at such a difficult time. Someone so welcoming leaves a lasting mark on the hotel she manages and owns in Penafiel.
