Katekero II

Peniche is a nice place to visit, and in February we got to experience the Carnaval festivities. The hotel itself was disappointing. The room looked worn out and nothing like the photo, with hair in the bed, broken furniture, and a generally dirty feel. Staff seemed poorly trained, gave almost no information, were often missing, and didn’t seem particularly friendly. Breakfast was served in the closed patio of the restaurant next door. There were no curtains, so it turned into a sauna in the sun, and we weren’t allowed inside the restaurant to get out of the heat, even though it wasn’t open to the public yet.

I’d read the Google reviews and some of the complaints had me thinking, “oh my god.” But I was really surprised by how much I liked the place. The staff were super friendly, my room was clean and warm, and the bed was very comfortable. The wifi worked perfectly for two Zoom calls I had to make in the morning, and there was even a hairdryer, which these kinds of hotels usually don’t have. I paid just 40€ for the room, which was a really good price. It’s a perfectly fine hotel. I guess some people expect a five-star stay for less.

The room didn’t match the picture, and I found a cockroach in it. The hair dryer was broken, too. Reception was often left unattended, and staff didn’t seem experienced at making things right after a bad stay. I don’t recommend it. Find somewhere else for your holiday and hard-earned money.

Everything worked well, and we found the staff friendly. The place was clean, the breakfast was good, and it was good value. Parking right outside is the one small drawback, so you have to carry your bags from wherever you manage to park nearby. Still, very good overall.
