We got here today and have been really unlucky with the weather. That’s not the resort’s fault, but the pools are described as heated in some places and as acclimatised on the hotel’s own site. In practice, they only feel warm when the weather is warm. We’re facing a week of cold rain with two young children who’ve been looking forward to the pool for weeks. The water is too cold for them, and with the outside temperature I worry they’ll get sick. I asked if the children could use the indoor pool, which is part of the spa, for just one hour on a couple of days. That would have been enough to keep them happy. I said other families would appreciate it too, and we’d fit in with any time that suited the spa. They offered no compromise, not even one hour over the whole week. I wouldn’t expect that from a family hotel. We’re here for my father’s 70th birthday and had asked in advance to have rooms together, especially since the little ones like moving between rooms. On the phone I was told it shouldn’t be a problem and they’d do their best. When we arrived, we were told we couldn’t be together because we were in different blocks. Guest relations said the room categories were different, deluxe versus family. Why wasn’t I told that on the phone? Restaurant reservations were another headache, with everything supposedly fully booked. Guest relations said nothing could be booked after Thursday, but at the next desk I overheard someone making a Friday reservation. After I pushed, I eventually got one for Friday, but only after some back and forth. I don’t understand why we’re being treated as second-rate. The service has been bitterly disappointing and has spoiled what should’ve been a lovely group trip for a milestone birthday. The only reason I’m giving two stars rather than one is Sophia the Head Chef, who went out of her way to help with dietary requirements. She’s a shining star for the resort. Her service and manner alone would get five stars from me.

We had a wonderful time here with friends for their daughter’s fourth birthday, five adults and three children. The rooms felt new, fresh and clean, with some nice decorative touches. The complex is laid out really well, with three main pools, another for children, and a separate adults-only one. That’s a good balance. The Pluma building was especially useful for entertainment, as we could leave the kids supervised and take a nice break. Staff were excellent throughout, especially in the restaurant, where they arranged a cake, candle and birthday message. Thanks so much, Sonia. The food was good, but not great. There was plenty of it, though the cooking could’ve been better and the variety fell a little short for our health-conscious tastes. For example, there was no smoked salmon at breakfast. That may not matter to most people. Parking out front was tight and could use some shade. Perhaps solar panels could provide that and help power the hotel and pools too.

The beach is a 10-minute walk away, though it felt more like five because the route is so beautiful. A private bridge crosses the road and joins a wooden path straight to the beach. It’s a lovely spot for an early swim, a daytime look at the caves, or sunset, and a nice touch for a resort that isn’t right on the beach. The shuttle train to Alvor Fishing village runs all day and gives you a free trip out. We’ve just come back from a beautiful four-night stay at Tivoli Alvor Algarve Resort, and we’d definitely return. We’ve already been telling family and friends about it, and some are looking into booking future holidays. We’re a young couple who wanted a relaxing break before our baby arrives in July, and it gave us that and more. Our room was modern and stylish, with an open layout that felt bright and spacious. The spa pool and jacuzzi were lovely and warm, so I could swim and relax while my partner used the gym. Staff were friendly, polite, helpful and attentive to everyone. We loved the six pools. There’s a children’s pool with water slides, a busy, fun family pool, and a quiet adults’ pool that we enjoyed most. I’d like to see more cocktails at the adults’ pool bar, since you have to walk to another bar for other options. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were buffet style, clearly labelled and accommodating. There was a wide range of dishes, with some repeated, and we liked trying something new each night. The fish dishes were delicious. Our favourite was the fantastic barbecue lunch, with meat cooked outside and lots of fresh salads and fruit inside. We also booked one of the reservation restaurants and weren’t disappointed. We thought Tivoli Alvor Algarve Resort was a wonderful short break. It was one of our best, and others we spoke to there seemed to agree.

We went to Tivoli Alvor Algarve Resort for five days with our baby and found the stay really disappointing. The resort looks beautiful, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable, but the rest didn’t live up to expectations. The food and drinks were the main problem. For a five-star all-inclusive, we expected much better. The food looked fresh but tasted extremely bland, with little flavour, seasoning or real variety. The drinks tasted cheap too. We were often still hungry after meals and ordered food several times, which meant unexpected extra costs. We also spent more on taxis and meals outside the resort just to eat properly, which defeats the point of all-inclusive. Service added to the stress. After a long journey with a baby, we called reception for extra water to make formula. The response felt dismissive, and we couldn’t tell whether anyone had even registered the request. We didn’t need it every day, but some understanding of our situation would’ve helped. We were also promised an iron and ironing board in the room, but they never came. After waiting more than a day and a half and calling several times, we had to ask the housekeeping staff ourselves. The place itself is attractive, but the food and drinks and the lack of responsive service made this stressful instead of relaxing. It was very disappointing for a five-star resort. Based on our experience, we wouldn’t return or recommend it.

This felt closer to a three-star resort, maybe three-plus at best, than a five-star one. Our room had a noticeable smell, warped flooring and a door that barely opened. Housekeeping didn’t replace basics like soap, toilet paper, towels or tissues, and although we asked several times, the TV stayed broken for all five nights. Meals were disappointing too. The buffet was low quality and repetitive, especially for children. If you don’t like seafood, choices are very limited. The meat was bland and overcooked. The sit-down restaurants were short staffed and slow, and seemed to serve buffet food again in a different form. There was no drink service by the pool, and the hotel didn’t enforce its own rules about reserving loungers. There was hardly any entertainment: one kids’ karaoke, occasional water polo, and otherwise not much. Evenings were dead. The kids’ club didn’t feel safe to us. We saw a child leave without anyone accompanying them, and the other kids seemed unsupervised and confused, so we chose not to use it. For an all-inclusive, the offer was extremely weak. There were no drinks after 7 p.m., no evening entertainment, no late-night food, and bottled water wasn’t readily available. The “Premium” option felt like a joke. The train into town was great for the kids, and the beach walk is beautiful. But this resort badly underdelivered, and I wouldn’t return.
