Cale Guest House

Breakfast was good, though I’d have liked a little more variety. With so few rooms, I can understand the limited selection. We stayed just two nights, and they still cleaned our room after the first night while we were at breakfast, which was a nice touch. The staff were very friendly and attentive, and breakfast was included. The guest house is in a historic building near Ribeira, with easy access to Porto’s main sights. There’s no elevator, as is common in historic buildings around Portugal, so it may not work for guests with mobility issues.

We spent three nights here and would definitely recommend it. The rooms were spacious and clean, and the location was ideal, just a few minutes from restaurants and the water. Breakfast had lots of options and was delicious. The friendly staff also helped us store our tandem bike.

Right in the center of Porto, with Ribeira about five minutes away and R.das Flores, with its great bars and restaurants, just beside it. We found the price very reasonable for what was offered, and I’d book Cale Guest House again if I return. It’s a basic hotel, but very clean. Our room had a little garden area to sit in, and breakfast was plentiful, with tea, coffee, cereal, pastries, meat and cheese. They also welcomed us with a glass of Port. The staff were so warm and friendly whenever we saw them. The old building has lots of stairs and no lift, but staff carried our bags up and left them in our room for us.

The best parts were the location, a couple of blocks from the water, and a good-sized, quiet room with a comfortable bed. Staff were friendly and even hauled our heavy bags up the stairs. Breakfast was enough to get the day started. The old building and setting are great, but the problems were frustrating. Ants got into the room and the cookie jar. The shower head was broken and only worked as a handheld. When we mentioned it, staff said they already knew and were fixing it, which they did that day. The bathroom handle fell off just before bed, leaving us unable to get in all night, so we used the lobby bathroom. We called and texted the after-hours numbers, since no one was on site late at night, but got no reply. It was fixed the next day. I wish we’d heard back when we tried to contact them, and that we’d been told about the shower before we needed to use it.
