Pestana Palacio do Freixo, Pousada & National Monument - The Leading Hotels of the World

The spa is worth making time for. The rooms are enchanting, and breakfast was just as lovely. It all feels five-star. The hotel is peaceful, away from the city's chaos, but still close enough to walk to the center. A great place to stay if you're anywhere near OPorto.

We ended up hungry because there wasn't room for all the guests to have dinner at the hotel, and there's no shop or other restaurant nearby. When we asked for help, the staff kept answering, “we are very sorry.” The lovely view is only from the hall. All the rooms are in a new building, and they're small. Service was practically nonexistent: we waited an hour for an iron in our room, then another hour at the bar just to have a bottle of wine opened. A very disappointing expectation-versus-reality experience.

Dinner and breakfast in the palace were the best part for me. It's a beautiful old place with a lot of history, and I'd recommend staying for the experience. Our ground-floor room was comfortable and had what we needed, though the rooms are fairly standard. I'd suggest asking for the first or second floor if you'd like a view. There was a stain on the rug, and someone came into our room at 10 a.m. without knocking. Those were minor issues for us compared with the palace itself.

December was a lovely time to be here. There were fewer people, the air was cool, and the quiet felt real. The palace stands solidly beside the river, with history that doesn't need to show off. Our room was comfortable and clean, with everything we needed and no extras. Nights were silent, and we slept well. The staff were kind and dependable. The bell boys handled our luggage respectfully, and the driver was punctual, calm, and professional. Breakfast was unhurried, with fresh bread, strong coffee, and soft winter light through the tall windows. For the location, atmosphere, service, and history, we thought it was very good value. We left happy and would return.
