The Largo

I felt more at home here than I have anywhere away from home. When I accidentally ate something I’m allergic to, which caused only a mild reaction, at least four staff members checked on me during the rest of the stay. That care really says a lot about the team. I was visiting with friends, and the thoughtful design and personal stories behind the art and even the napkins made the place feel connected to both its guests and the city. The Largo feels luxurious without being stuffy. I’ve travelled all over and haven’t found another place like it. I’ll be back to thank my new friends and try whatever Chef Nuno is cooking.

The hotel is right in the lively center of Porto, so getting around was easy, yet it still felt like a quiet place to recharge. We came with a big group of friends to celebrate two birthdays at the end of September. The concierge arranged outings that suited our interests and gave us a real feel for Porto, and we enjoyed them just as much as the hotel itself. From the local art and decor to the breakfast we looked forward to each morning, the place felt rooted in Portuguese culture. The staff were so kind and often seemed to know what we needed before we did. One of the best hotels I’ve stayed in, and I’d happily recommend it to anyone visiting Porto.

The rooms feel more like individual apartments than standard hotel rooms, and each has its own layout and character. They’re beautifully done, quiet at night, and completely dark once the shutters are closed. Upstairs, there’s a gym with a rowing machine that looks out over the city, and the terrace by the pool is a lovely spot for breakfast. I’ve never had a better hotel breakfast, with local cheeses, meats, breads, spreads, and fresh juices. The Largo’s woodwork, furnishings, and art bring Porto’s history and culture into the whole space, and the photos don’t quite capture how good it looks in person. Staff knew our names and helped us feel at home. A “connector” can also arrange experiences around your interests. Ours set up a private city tour that explained the area’s history and layout, and they can point you toward wine, art, and shopping. There’s even a hidden vault door to the wine cellar. The rooms are a treat, and that workout view is hard to beat.

The best part of our anniversary stay was how the staff picked up on what might make it more enjoyable, with little notes and thoughtful suggestions along the way. They even surprised us with drinks and snacks during a bike trip. The suites were perfect in every detail, with beautiful art, architecture, and materials throughout. It was pure luxury, but in a quiet, elegant way. We had an amazing time at The Largo.
