Hostel on the Hill

The peaceful morning breakfast on the balconies was just what I needed before setting out for the next hike. There are no shops in this small village, but the house has a little cupboard stocked with essentials for a small contribution. I also enjoyed seeing guests use the shared spaces as if they were at home, and reading the bathroom walls downstairs gave me a sense of connection with people who’d stayed there before. I spent a night here with a friend on our way to Lagos along the Trilho dos Pescadores. The affordable price and good reviews had caught our attention. We walked up from Zavial beach to this little part of Raposeira, and the surrounding hills and cluster of homes in Hortas do Tabual were beautiful. After ten days of hiking from Porto Covo, we arrived with plenty of experiences and impressions, and quickly felt this would be one of our favorite places. Martijn was kind and clearly happy to welcome us to his amazing house. I was taken by the surrounding nature and how warm the place felt. Definitely recommended :)

A wonderful hostel in a beautiful setting, with lovely staff. You can walk to the beach in 30-40 minutes.

Salema’s accommodation was so expensive that I walked a little farther along the Fishermen’s trail, even though it took me off route. I’m glad I did. Martijn made me feel welcome, and the place has a lovely vibe. The shared room was really spacious. If you haven’t brought food to cook, there’s a little corner where you can buy something at what I thought was a very good price. This was my favorite hostel on the trail.

I’ve stayed here while surfing three years in a row, and I’m always happy with it. The hostel is clean, with housekeeping every day, and the service is consistently great. The owner is really friendly and helpful, always willing to explain things or lend a hand. I’d definitely recommend it.
