The house was an easy drive from the airport, which wasn't a nuisance at all, and we could watch the ferry to and from Porto Santo pass each morning and evening. We spent a wonderful 10 nights here. It's recently renovated and has everything you need, including a great barbecue grill with firewood and skewers provided. The kitchen knives were dull, though. For access, stick to the well maintained ER207, which isn't busy. The shorter options are extremely steep and go straight up the mountain, we got stuck on one in our rented Opel Corsa. There's always a parking space right by the road. I'd avoid renting a car with less than 100 horsepower on Madeira, it just isn't much fun. One recommendation: Sol Verde, a simple local restaurant with good food and very fair prices.

The cottage is beautiful, well kept, and has a lovely ocean view. Getting there can be tricky: after picking up my car at the airport, my satnav routed me through R. Da Calçada, R. De São Sebastião, and R. Da Mécia. Those streets are very steep and may be difficult for many cars. I'd take the ER207 instead, then turn onto Estrada dos Moinhos.

I recommend renting a car to explore the island with more comfort and freedom, though a bus does stop right in front of the house. From the airport, there are three possible routes to Casa da Horta. I'd choose the longest one, only 2 km extra and much easier. The other two are more challenging if you're not used to steep roads. The house is a spacious, comfortable rural home from 1896, recently renovated with all the amenities of the 21st century and nicely decorated. There's a wood-burning stove in the living room, perfect for cooler days, plus a large garden with a barbecue and sun loungers.

Quietly situated and lovingly renovated, this beautiful holiday house is just right for 4-5 people. Street parking is available, and the bus stops right outside. It's close to the airport, but you hardly notice that, and it's a great base for exploring the island.

The house has the equipment needed for a good stay, and I recommend it. Its best features are the large garden, quiet setting, sea views, and covered barbecue area. It's been fully renovated while keeping the region's traditional character.
