The rooms and bathrooms were generally clean, and the fresh bread at breakfast was tasty. There’s some peace and quiet here, but the price doesn’t make sense for a rundown, poorly maintained hotel in its current state. We had electrical problems in our room and had to move for one night while they tried to find the cause. Nobody told us what it was, but the overall state of the electrical system made me think the place hadn’t had proper maintenance since at least the 1980s. The rooms also feel stuck in the 19th century, with spring locks, bar locks, window latches, and visible gaps around the doors. The bathroom taps were loose, the shower door screeched terribly, the couches were worn, and the carpets were so threadbare they were barely visible. In this old, never-renovated villa, you can hear everything the neighbours do, including TikToks playing on their phones. The gardens and surrounding grounds looked completely neglected, like something from a post-apocalyptic novel. The pool was greenish and dirty, the sunbeds were dusty and stained, and the pool area looked like it hadn’t been swept in weeks. Breakfast was very modest and ran surprisingly late, from 9 to 11 am. There were no hot dishes, not even scrambled eggs, just a few kinds of ham and cheese, hard-boiled eggs, tomatoes, and cucumber. Front-desk staff spoke English at very different levels, from almost native to struggling. They clearly value the historic character of the place, but it needs a general renovation to be worth the money.

Finding somewhere in Sintra that could fit all our wedding guests was tricky, since most hotels in town are small. Casa Holstein worked perfectly for our welcome party. It’s central, the property is beautiful, and Nuno, the property manager, was helpful and quick to communicate whenever we needed anything. The guests who stayed there had a lovely experience too. I’d recommend it for a stay in Sintra or for hosting an event.

A really good base for enjoying Sintra. The room was spacious and had a separate studio, which worked well for writing or getting some work done. Breakfast was good, and the staff were very attentive. The location is very good too.

We loved how peaceful and welcoming it felt, even with the hotel right in town and close to the palaces and local places. The house has a warmth that photos don't quite show, and it was even prettier in person. Breakfast was lovely, with staff topping things up every few minutes to keep it fresh. The whole place feels cozy and cared for. Our room was beside the breakfast area, so we kept the windows closed for privacy. One night we heard kids running around, and there was a steady dripping noise that seemed to come from an AC unit and sounded like rain. Those were small issues for us, though. I fell for the place and would happily stay again.

We had a phenomenal stay at Casa Holstein. The staff were friendly and warm, and we really liked the excellent breakfast. Its location is perfect too. My husband and I would definitely recommend it to couples wanting a romantic visit to Sintra.
