Al-Gharb Tavira Eco Guest House

The staff are nice, and the location is decent, within walking distance of the center and old town. The station is a three-minute taxi ride away. I thought the rate was too high, even for August. I wouldn't pay more than €80. One thing to know if you book a taxi: the guest house isn't at number 1. Be sure to specify the guest house, or the driver may wait at number 1, the door just before it.

It's a great place to unwind, with a good location and a real home-away-from-home feel. The furniture is simple, recycled and colourful, with lots of handmade decorations by the owner or friends. It's really clean too 👌 There are no TVs in the rooms, but in the Algarve you're here for the sunny outdoors. On windy days, you can pick a room with a private balcony, relax on the rooftop and get a tan, or choose a room with a river view. Staff aren't always around, but they're reachable by phone. It feels like being a guest in someone's home, not in a 5⭐ hotel where you don't even know the staff's faces. March is perfect, with sunny days and hardly any tourists. The staff were nice, and the guest house was okay. But the bathroom had no ventilation, so the whole room got damp. Our towel stayed wet for all four days, and after our first shower there were droplets on the ceiling. We tried running the air conditioning and leaving the bathroom door open, but it barely helped.

We found this lovely guesthouse by chance and ended up staying longer than we meant to. It has a quirky feel, and you can easily walk into Tavira from its great location. The owners were incredibly helpful, and the roof terrace has a lovely view over the river.
