Hotel Princesa Do Gilao

Parking was easy enough, with cheap street parking or one of the hotel's limited free spaces. The location is excellent, right across the bridge from the boats to the island and within walking distance of downtown bars, fairs and restaurants. This is a simple hotel, recently renovated, where everything works well. Breakfast was good, 4/5; I just missed having a hot protein option, though at €10 it was excellent value. Maria, the afternoon receptionist, was the standout. We've worked in hotel networks ourselves, and she was friendly, helpful and assertive, giving us the best check-in we've had and attentive support throughout. She could take on a role at an international hotel. One thing to improve in the mornings: this is a family hotel and the older ladies are very kind, but at times family members move around without uniforms and talk very loudly. With guests right there, it takes away a little from the hospitality you'd expect. We'd happily stay again.

My room was small, clean and efficient, with a lovely little balcony. I was only there one night, so the view didn't matter to me. Street construction made getting to the hotel challenging. One useful tip: put your key card in the small holder by the door to switch on all the electricity. And don't miss the Gelato store in the building. The gelato and ice cream are great, and they have gluten-free and vegan cones.

Our river-facing room was 202, and the views were magnificent, including at night when everything was lit up. We spent 9 nights here recently and couldn't fault the hotel. It's spotless, the staff are very friendly and helpful, and the location puts you close to everything. There's outdoor seating and coffee available all day in the foyer. We'd have no hesitation about returning on our next visit to Tavira.

The big room had a great view, and the hotel was clean and nice. It's in a fantastic location in a lovely town. We'll come back one day.
