Vila Gale Tavira Resort Hotel

The spacious rooms and Arabic-style design gave the hotel a lot of character, and we found everything clean and well looked after. Some room details feel more classic than modern, but the comfort and facilities made up for that. We especially enjoyed the pools, spa, and generous breakfast. It’s a calm, comfortable base for seeing Tavira and the surrounding area, and we’d be glad to return.

The beds were comfortable, breakfast was included and very good, and a few staff members were genuinely kind. But this was a deeply disappointing stay, and I would not choose this hotel again. The place felt old and musty and badly in need of renovation. There was no pool, despite the impression there might be one. In the room, we had just one luggage rack for two people and four drawers, the phone didn’t work, several lights were out, and a thick shaggy rug by the bed was easy to trip on. There was no iron, laundry bag, or tissues. Emails also went unanswered. The bathroom was frustrating too. There were no washcloths or tissues, and the shower pressure was barely a trickle, so showering took ages. The sink and toilet pressure were fine, and there was plenty of cold water, so it didn’t seem like a general issue with Europe. Since the room phone was broken, I went downstairs to complain. The front desk woman just shrugged and said, “Well, this is Europe.” My daughter’s shower in the same hotel worked perfectly, and a cleaner let me check an empty room where that shower also worked fine. We used the bidet towels as a bathmat because a proper bathmat wouldn’t fit when the bathroom door opened. The garage had poor lighting and terrible signs, and there was no security. We could come and go freely, except for one odd occasion. I spoke with an assistant manager who apologized and offered compensation for another stay. That’s not happening.

The setting is beautiful and so is the room. The coffee maker is complimentary, though we had to move furniture to reach an outlet. To get to Tavira, the boat takes you to the island and then you still need the ferry, which means a lot of waiting. It would be useful to have a direct option. We had the ham and cheese toast that evening, but it was much too dry.

We visited Soul & Blues at Hotel Vila Galé, Tavira in November 2025. It has an old-school feel, and the staff were friendly, though the service itself was only okay. My two draught Sagres beers were fine. My wife’s veg sandwich had decent-looking ingredients but was pretty average in flavour. A simple, no-frills place for a drink if you’re nearby.
