Smiling Places

Fernando made our stays memorable, helping us feel at ease and communicating easily in English. My wife said leaving felt like saying goodbye to a favorite cousin. We stayed three nights in late October while exploring Porto and northern Portugal, then returned for our final night before flying from OPO the next morning. The location is a little out of the way, but easy to reach, close to the beach, and near some great places to eat in Angeiras. We wish we could have met Elisabete, who was recovering from a broken foot, though Fernando had clearly learned how to be a terrific host from her. We wholeheartedly recommend Smiling Places and hope to come back.

The views, comfy bed, lovely shower, and fresh breakfast made just for me all helped make this a special stay. Elisabete has put together a beautiful, carefully thought-out space, right down to the décor and the high-quality Rituals products in the bathroom. Fernando also went out of his way at the last minute, driving me to the post office so I could get there before it closed. Such a warm and caring place, and a great spot to rest while walking the Camino.

After 17 km on the Portuguese Camino, arriving to find Fernando at the gate and Elisabete on crutches was exactly what we needed. They made us feel at home, like we'd known them for years, and the hugs helped too. Their dinner suggestion was right on, and breakfast sent us off perfectly for the next 15 km.

Such kind, gracious hosts. They made our short stop along the Camino a real pleasure, and were among the loveliest people we've met on our travels.
