The owner’s response after our cash went missing was the worst part. She smirked and dismissed what I reported, saying it “hadn’t happened” and implying we were lying because it had never happened before. We asked the hotel to contact the police, which staff said they did, but after about two hours of denials and waiting we left, down £360 in two currencies. We had to find another Western Union to replace the money and still get to our next destination. The people there were appalled and more apologetic than the hotel staff. Booking.com was notified, and when we messaged the hotel, they suggested we might find the money in our luggage while still denying they had accused us of lying. We’d stayed an extra night because one of us was unwell and had barely left the locked room except to get food. While packing to leave, we realized all our cash was gone. We reported it straight away. Two staff members searched the room, as though we might have hidden the money ourselves. We’ve travelled extensively and stayed in hotels around the world for decades without this happening. Maybe that left us too trusting. The stay ended up costing more than ten times the room price. Definitely not recommended.
