Pensiunea Unglerus

Our room had one golden window looking out over the pines and spires of ancient Transylvania. The place felt remote and fantastical, as aesthetic as it gets. The restaurant was an odd experience: good food and prices, wonderful wine, and some questionable extras. It really does feel like a “resort” in every sense. I’d come back.

The staff were pleasant, and we appreciated the breakfast. The hotel itself was very mediocre, with worn furnishings that need updating. There was no hot water, so we had cold showers. The water wasn’t potable, but there was no drinking water in the room either, so we had to find a filtered dispenser in the lobby. Dinner the night before was unpleasant: the chicken rice soup came with no rice, very few vegetables, and a thin broth with neon green flecks, perhaps from packaged soup stock.

The room was okay and had a medieval feel, like the restaurant. The restaurant, which also serves breakfast, is about 200m from the pension. Its interior is nicely done, with armor and weapons on the walls. The food was good, but I wasn’t happy with the service. I got the impression the staff didn’t like their jobs. It was odd having the pension in a separate building. We had to search for it because it was poorly marked, then find our room inside. There’s an old bronze plate above the pension door, but it isn’t lit.

For the past 5 years, I’ve gone there every August and always make time to eat there at least once per trip. Best restaurant in Biertan! I love the mushrooms with polenta, and the stew with local sour cream is amazing. Definitely try it!
