I really wish I’d read the reviews before booking that so-called “room” for my friend, who was visiting Oradea as a tourist. It was a basement room with no windows and no decent ventilation. The humidity was extremely high, there was mold on the walls, and the bed sheets smelled musty. The room fan didn’t work at all. There were little makeshift fans at the air vents, but they did nothing to improve the cave-like air. When we arrived, the host seemed nice and offered tips about free parking. We trusted him and didn’t have time to notice the conditions properly. My friend was meant to stay six nights, but on the first night he could only bear to be there from midnight to 1 am. He’d driven for many hours and was too tired to look for somewhere else that late, so he slept in the car. In the morning, he called me and insisted I come see the room myself so I’d understand why he couldn’t sleep there. I tried several times to reach the host that morning without success, even though he’d said we could call anytime. We left the keys in the mailbox because the place was unliveable, and hoped to speak with him about getting a refund for the remaining nights. After many calls, I messaged him through the Booking application to explain how disappointed we were. He told me there to call again. When I did, I couldn’t even speak or explain myself. The person representing the host spoke to me in a very dirty, threatening and challenging way, simply because I asked for the money back for the five nights we wouldn’t use. I can’t call someone like that “sir.” He boasts about his experience working with people, but I felt I was dealing with someone who had no common sense or understanding of respect. I put up with his inappropriate and violent behaviour so I could end the call civilly. I think he understood, but unfortunately it was too late. I also tried to reach Booking about what felt like an injustice, but they didn’t get involved. That leaves me very skeptical about using Booking for accommodation again. I wonder how it can be legal to rent a place like this.
