Pensiunea Gaby

The shower was good, the yard was pleasant, and everything was very clean. But the stay didn’t match the description: it was noisy by the main road, the mattress wasn’t comfortable, and it felt overpriced by comparison. No one spoke English.

This is the Paul Everac memorial house and museum, not the B&B called “Gaby,” which is a couple of Km away. The listing seems to have put the “Gaby” label on the museum by mistake. There are many sculpture groups along the highway, so it’s easy to end up at the wrong place instead of the museum; even Wikimapia has it marked in the wrong spot. Anyone interested in art or history should visit the Everac museum and its sculpture collection. Paul Everac, the great Romanian playwright, presided each year over the biggest creative camp. For more than thirty years, artists came to spend their summers there, carving stone and wood and leaving behind one of the best open air forests of sculptures. Madame Everac once told me that an artist didn’t need much, just a big bowl of mushroom stew and plenty of the local tzuica. The camp kept growing year after year despite communist constraints and lack of funds. Everac’s artistic vision, along with help from a few donors, made it possible to build the “Aula” beside the open air theater. There’s also a magical space below, but I’ll leave that surprise for you to discover.

They have a broad selection of products at prices to suit every budget. The service was impeccable, and the staff were both professional and kind.

The host was nice, and the rooms were clean and spacious.
