Hostel Kavala

We had a good time there, and could keep our food in a fridge at reception. We also learned we could have requested a room with its own toilet and shower instead of using the one in the hallway. It's worth knowing that they usually leave rooms unlocked for guests to let themselves in at small, inexpensive places like this in Serbia, the owner explained when we finally met. Getting to that point was quite an adventure. We arrived at Hostel Kavala during the day, but nobody was around and the place seemed abandoned. The front door was open, but there was no one to greet us. We were only in Belgrade for a few days and hadn't arranged a local mobile network, so we couldn't call anyone. We also tend to put our phones away when we're briefly visiting another country. Stuck in the street with nobody to ask, we got annoyed and looked for another hotel, but found just one room available. A neighbor eventually connected us with an older woman who tried to help, though she didn't speak English, so we communicated with simple gestures. She called the owner, and he explained the self check-in custom when we met. I'd recommend the place to young people traveling in groups or older people looking for a very cheap stay. You can ask for sightseeing tips too, and they'll gladly explain what to see.
