Hotel Lepenski Vir

The view of the Danube from the higher rooms on that side was lovely, and the surroundings were nice. The hotel sits above the city, so walking back uphill can be tiring. There was plenty of food of decent quality on half board, with an average selection, but it was satisfying for the price. Staff were mostly nice. There were lots of children's sports clubs staying there, mostly on the lower floors, and the hotel is big enough that they didn't bother us much. The pool could get crowded, though it was still possible to swim. I stayed in mid-August 2020. It’s a large hotel with lots of space, a good location, quiet surroundings, and a swimming pool. The building is old and needs renovation. My room wasn't very clean, the furniture was old, and it was almost impossible to air out the toilet. There weren’t enough towel rails, and the slippery tiles around the pool seemed risky. It was good value at the time, though I noticed that by 2021 a stay was about 20% more expensive.

After cycling 50 miles, discovering the hotel was at the top of a steep hill was a shock. Google Maps showed it at the crossroads in the town center, and the location was badly wrong. The schoolchildren staying there surprised me, but they weren't a problem. I was lucky my mealtimes didn't overlap with theirs. My room was quiet and pleasant, with a good river view from the balcony. I would have known about the school holiday camps if I’d read the reviews first, but that wouldn’t have put me off. I rather liked the slightly faded 1970s feel, too.

Donji Milanovac is a lovely town, with welcoming locals and good local food in its restaurants at affordable prices. The Danube and the surrounding nature are beautiful, and there are many historical sites to see. The hotel itself is in a lovely spot with a special microclimate that makes for a restorative, relaxing stay. It’s decent and renovated, and the staff were exceptionally helpful and professional. I recommend it to everyone.

The hotel is in a wonderful spot beyond the Danube, with a stunning view, but it’s hard to find. It’s misplaced on maps, hidden from the main road, and there are no signs pointing the way. This impressive socialist-era building is the only real hotel in town near the Djerdap, but it has been allowed to run down. It should be preserved and rebuilt as a four-star hotel by a capable investment fund. As it stands, it’s cheap and rates itself as two stars. The rooms were clean to a basic standard, though I wasn’t sure about the bed quality. Service was poor: outside reception, people expected Serbian, with no English. In the restaurant they wanted me to speak Italian, so I tried, “io palare un po italiano.” For the included breakfast, you have to buy coffee upstairs at the bar, and the rest of breakfast wasn’t worth having. At the shop, they wanted to sell me beer at 8 a.m. because I looked like an alcoholic, but I wanted water.
