We planned three nights, but stayed four because I had a bout of food poisoning, which did not come from the hotel. The place is pleasant in some ways, but a little worn and seriously overpriced. It's perched on a hill that could have amazing views, except large eucalyptus trees block the outlook from the rooms. It's on the edge of a huge, spread-out national park, so it's hard to say where the best location would be. The standalone brick cottages are spacious, with separate rooms and fireplaces, but maintenance is poor. Shower rails were coming off the walls, door handles falling out, and the beds sagged. WiFi in the rooms didn't work, which was frustrating at this price. Reception had WiFi, but the building layout is odd: you can only reach the bar by going outside or through the restaurant. Food varied a lot. One night's buffet was ordinary, with no meat except a few chicken drumsticks. The picnic breakfast for our chimp trek was huge and great, and some à la carte dishes, especially the salads, were good. But overall the food felt poor value for the high prices. F&B staff were generally great, though we were charged for an extra drink and they tried to count a basic lunch as our half board while charging the pricier dinner rate. The reception staff were useless and kept pushing laundry on us. Their per-item laundry prices were among the highest I've seen anywhere. Room cleaning was good, but after I was sick all day the previous day, nobody offered to change the sheets or towels. With some repairs and a price half as high, this could be a good hotel.

The restaurant has wonderful views, and the grounds are neatly kept with plenty of birds and the occasional vervet monkey. Our chalet was great: a large sleeping area, roomy bathroom with a walk-in shower, and even a snug lounge. Turn-down service left a welcome hot water bottle in the bed. The bar had a good range of local and international beers, and the restaurant food was good.

The spectacular views and comfortable stay made a good base for our chimpanzee tracking day and canopy walk. Food was a real highlight, especially the beef on our first night. The takeaway breakfast and lunch were generous and substantial. All the staff were friendly and accommodating, with Jean D'amour especially memorable. I'd give the room four stars because there was no mosquito net around the bed. It wasn't a major issue, though we did get a couple of bites on the first night.

The setting is lovely, and on a sunny day the views from this strategic spot are beautiful. Rooms are nicely decorated and big enough, and the staff are friendly and clearly trying hard. But the food was terrible. The vegetables seemed canned rather than fresh, the fish fillet had no taste, and I asked for coconut sauce but got cocktail sauce. Nobody apologized for the mix-up. They tried to tell me it was coconut sauce. Such a shame for such a nice location. Breakfast was bad too, with dry bread. The manager needs to make sure the food is better quality. It's overpriced otherwise.

Top View Hill Hotel was fantastic. The rooms and staff surpassed what I could have imagined, and after staying at luxury hotels across Africa, I'd say this one meets every requirement. Each night, someone put warm water bottles in my bed, and the sheets and towels were cleaned daily. Fresh flowers in the bathroom and a fire lit in my room every evening were lovely touches. The national park is only minutes away, and getting to and from the hotel is quite simple. You could spend ten times more at the slightly better One&Only, but I'd save the money and have a wonderful stay at Top View.
