The lodge and rooms are spacious, warm, and inviting, with a fireplace they keep going. That was especially nice on the cooler fall nights. The kitchen is top notch, too. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, and the chefs are very talented. Freshly baked breads and pastries were outstanding. Benjamin and his team pay close attention to detail and go out of their way to make guests happy. The staff are very friendly and genuinely concerned that you’re enjoying your stay, and they do their best to accommodate requests. After our three nights, I can say this place was exceptional. Rwanda and its people are working hard to welcome upscale tourists, and they deserve your business.

Near the start of the gorilla trekking trails on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, Bisate Lodge is a luxury eco-lodge with six stylish forest villas. Each has a private lounge, an ensuite bathroom, and a wood-burning fireplace for cozy evenings. Prices start at around $2,569 per person per night and include meals, drinks, and activities such as gorilla trekking and nature walks.

The food was great, and the rooms were unique and very nice. But for what we paid, we expected a premium experience, and it didn’t feel worth the money. We wouldn’t stay again, especially since there are plenty of other lodges. We stayed three nights in August. The lodge let five visitors who weren’t staying there join the hotel guests for dinner. Their group of ten was too large for the dining area. After gorilla trekking, we just wanted a quiet meal to talk about the experience, but we couldn’t hear our family. We stopped our conversation several times to listen to the large group. The same thing happened on the third night, and the other guests apologized when they realized they’d taken over the place. We also asked JP and the other manager not to light a fire in our room because it was too hot and smoky, but we got a roaring fire anyway. With the price we paid, we expected better.

We had a fabulous three-night family stay while trekking with the gorillas at Volcanoes National Park, and felt it was well worth it. The staff were available around the clock, remembered our names and our likes and dislikes, and tailored things to make the stay special. They were friendly and ready to help with our needs. The food was delicious and creative, and we were especially surprised by how good the pizza was at the day lodge. There were lots of activities available, but we mostly wanted to enjoy the view and the quiet in our room.
