Hotel Strk

The spa area was a lovely surprise, modern and relaxing. There’s room for kids, plus a little farm with poultry and a huge stork nest, which explains the name. We stayed several nights, and camping is available too. The restaurant was excellent, though you’ll need to drive if you want to eat elsewhere. Breakfast was very good, with somewhat limited choices, and service was excellent throughout.

There are lovely little pools indoors and outdoors, plus an amazing hot tub. Plenty of parking, friendly staff, and free bikes for cycling into town, since the hotel is a little out of the way. We did find the rooms hot, and the air conditioning wasn’t very good.

We had a great one-night stay at Hotel Strk and would like to come back. The garden and animal park are lovely, and the rustic feel gives the place a cool atmosphere. Our room was small but cozy, with a balcony, heated floor, double bed, TV, AC, and mini refrigerator. The restaurant serves delicious a la carte lunch and dinner until 21:00. Its terrace, covered by growing vine, must look lovely in summer and autumn. The hotel and restaurant staff were very nice. Inside, the spa has a small pool, a jacuzzi for about 8 people, and 3 types of saunas. There’s also an outdoor pool in summer. One thing that could be better is keeping an eye on some guests. A few people got really drunk and were loud, and someone broke something or fell in the hall around 2, while people were sleeping. Families with children were also jumping and being loud in the spa. That could leave guests who came for peace and quiet feeling uncomfortable or disturbed. Still, it’s a good place to relax and clear your mind.

We ended up leaving a night early, after dinner service went so badly and the room’s air conditioning didn’t work at all. We’d booked three nights, Friday to Monday, directly by phone with reception. The receptionist was nice and gave us a 15% discount. The hotel looked good when we arrived, and on the first day the service, breakfast, and lunch were fine. It was quiet, with nice indoor and outdoor pools. The trouble started at dinner on the second night. There were about 15 outdoor tables, with only 3 occupied when we arrived, but we waited around 15 minutes to be served while staff attended tables that arrived after us. We ordered wine, beef tartare, and local sausages with cheese to start. For mains, my wife chose a regular mushroom soup and I ordered mixed salad with grilled calamari. The drinks came quickly, then we waited about 30 minutes for starters. When I asked why, the waitress spoke rather loudly and explained, or lectured me, that fresh beef tartare takes at least 30 minutes. I hadn’t made tartare myself, so I didn’t argue, but the explanation seemed absurd. The starters came soon after. My wife was given mushroom soup in a bread bowl instead of the regular soup she’d ordered, and I got my salad. The waiter, who was also helping at reception, said the kitchen had sent that and it was the same thing anyway, although it cost more. We said okay and didn’t want to complain. But when my wife opened the bread bowl, it was completely empty, with only a wet bottom, as if it had been someone else’s finished soup bowl. The receptionist said the kitchen had given it to him and the soup had probably soaked into the bread. Even if that were true, it was absurd to serve us an empty bowl without any apology. He took it away and brought her soup on a plate. My calamari were cold, so I guess the salad had been sitting around waiting to be collected. No one apologized during all this. Later the waitress asked if everything was okay. I told her what had gone wrong, and she didn’t want to acknowledge it. When I asked for the bill, she quickly apologized for “some misunderstanding” and said she wouldn’t charge for the second soup. After the service and explanations, she made it sound like she was doing me a favor by not charging for it. I felt at least that soup should have been free after their mistakes, especially if they had served us someone else’s empty bowl. After that, we decided not to stay through Monday. I had to pay the price without the 15% discount. Never again.
