The food has gone downhill over the last 10 years. Starters were canned seafood with potatoes, or assorted packaged meats and cheeses that looked like they came from a nearby store. The pasta had no flavor, and even plenty of salt only made it barely passable. The ragus tasted like the cheapest kind from a local shop. On the last evening, they switched off the soup heater, leaving the soup both cold and tasteless. Service was just as bad. The staff wore nice clothes, but the tables were left unattended so long that we had to set ours up ourselves. Nobody came over to take a drink order. They seemed busy cleaning empty tables, but not setting them, and on one occasion they cleared dirty plates without taking an order. We had three evenings like this. Not speaking Slovenian was the least of the problems. From cheap, tasteless food to shutting off the power and employing trainees still learning the job, this place is far from good. It’s a long way from what it was 10 years ago and seems to be facing real difficulties. Things look like they’re falling apart, and I genuinely feel sorry for them.

The pool complex was the one real pleasure, especially the large pool beside the sea. Breakfast at the Metropol was tolerable, with a fine bay view, and about what I’d expect from a 4-star place, though clearly below a 5-star standard. The room made sleep almost impossible. The casino across the way was noisy into the small hours, and the AC added a loud roar of its own. There was little respite overnight. The lavatory was in poor shape, with marks on the porcelain, mold around the bath, and walls that were scarred and pitted. Threadbare, stained carpets and signs of prolonged neglect gave the annex the feel of a late Soviet municipal office. We had arrived from the magnificent hotel park at Lake Bled, expecting a four-star establishment in Portorož. Instead, the reception was brusque, nearly discourteous, and the help with parking was hardly accommodating. The property isn’t really a hotel of its own, but an annex to the so-called five-star Metropol. That means no meaningful services or facilities on site, apart from those across the road. It was disappointing and poor value for the money. I’m writing now from the DoubleTree in Trieste, where the service and hospitality are a welcome contrast, and guests get the basic civility one should be able to expect.

We found Remisens Casa Rosa through an online hotel portal, but it had no rooms available. The hotel’s own website did, and the family suite was very good value for the money. The rooms were very clean, the staff very friendly, and there was a lovely view of the beach and sea. Breakfast and dinner were both really great. The food was awful and seemed old. I ended up with food poisoning. After all that, we couldn’t face more fighting over the room and just went to dinner. It was still dirty, with only the towels and bedsheets clean. We wished we’d never come. It was memorable, though, and getting home made us appreciate it all the more. Getting to that point was a mess. There was no parking, then we waited an hour to check in before finally getting the keys to a room still dirty from the previous guests. Reception told us when we could go to lunch, at our own expense, of course. We went to the sea and came back three and a half hours later, but the room still hadn’t been touched. The cleaning lady at the door looked shocked to see us. She’d come to clean it for a family with a one-month-old baby who had also been waiting three hours for that same room. In the hallway, another angry guest told us there were already people in her room when she entered.

This place feels like an overpriced, low-quality apartment, with none of the proper hotel decor or furniture you’d expect. The main Metropol hotel’s reception service was poor too: the staff seemed to have no idea about customer service and lacked professionalism. Cars were always getting tangled up during check-in, and the whole process was chaos. It doesn’t deserve 4 stars. At the most generous, it’s a 3-star place, or a 2-star apartment.
