The sunrise kayak trip on the river for birdwatching was the highlight. Rene provided the gear and binoculars, and catalogued more than 50 bird species we spotted. After our long but smooth travel day, the hotel had arranged a driver to pick us up at the airport. Rene greeted us warmly and shared helpful suggestions for our stay. The place has such a peaceful feel, with a perfect view of the lake and mountains. We also had a delicious breakfast outside each morning, prepared by Dora, who was incredibly accommodating. Pure peace!

Having breakfast in the garden, looking out over the greenery and Lago Suchitlan, was such a treat. The cook-to-order breakfast was included, and they brought us fresh limeade made from limes picked from the big tree in the garden. Chili and Puca, the two little dogs named after chilipuca a type of bean, were a delight. The hillside setting is peaceful, with a manicured lawn, coconut trees, a nice garden and an outstanding lake view. It's not far from the central plaza, and we could walk around Suchitoto's whole central area in less than a day. Being a little farther out also let us get to know the neighborhood and eat at the pupuserias that open at night. I was choosing between a couple of places and went with Mayan Grouper on instinct. I'm so glad I did, it felt like a vacation from our vacation. My only small gripe is that the bedroom was a bit gloomy and could use a lamp or a brighter bulb. I'd happily stay here again, and highly recommend it.

Rene is a superb host, and the place feels private, with a beautiful view. You can go birdwatching while kayaking in the morning.
