Honey House

After a long flight, I was still looking for a place to stay past 11 p.m. I had only a few Thai baht with me because my credit card had a problem, and several places turned me away, some quite rudely. The Honey Hotel took me in kindly and even brought an extra bed. The decor is old, but it’s pleasant to stay there, the service was excellent, and it was very good value.

The hotel is old but clean, and the location is really good, close to the BTS@MRT station and Terminal 21 mall. The price is low too. The restaurant was another story. Seeing a menu split between Western dishes like Kiev chicken and fillet minion and Thai food made me think they might not do both well, so we chose Thai. The shrimp and mushroom soup was okay, the crab meat in red curry was nice though we couldn’t really taste the curry, and the morning glory with shrimp was boring. The fried rice with chicken and with shrimp was good. None of it felt like real Thai food.

For the price, this is the best value in town. It’s an old hotel, but it’s secure and quiet in the Sukhumvit/Asok area, and regulars have been coming back for years. The military used it in the 70s. Staff are excellent and informative, and the restaurant is straightforward. It’s underrated. Go before it closes at the end of September 17.

I’m so sad, mak mak, to hear the Honey Hotel has been sold and will close in December 2017. My friends and I have stayed there lots of times, and I’ll treasure those late night rides from Suvarnabhumi Airport to check in before heading out for the evening. It’s central, close to everything you could want, and the original family owners are wonderful, friendly people. I keep trying to get those same friends to put up the money so we can buy it back from the new owners for a small profit and retire in BKK as hotel operators. I’ve got until December to make it happen, or it’s goodbye, Honey 😭😭😭😭.
