Ban Thong U, The Landmark

Our room faced a busy street, and some traffic noise came through, though it didn’t keep us from sleeping. Inside, it was spacious, with a great firm mattress, and the air conditioning worked well. The staff and owners were really sweet. It’s a beautiful teak house hotel with about five rooms, lots of wood, and an authentic interior. By the Ping River, the shaded terrace has tasty food and drinks, especially the Nam Menau, and a footbridge leads across to Warorot market.

The service was excellent, and they let us leave our bags there for a few days while we went on a short trip to Pai. The location is handy, right by the footbridge into the daytime market area. Our room did get quite a lot of road noise.

The rooms let in noise at all hours, and sleep was impossible for us. We heard constant traffic, motorbikes starting up and parking, young people shouting and partying by the footbridge, loud cheesy music from the carnival-like bar and restaurant next door, and recycling and rubbish trucks collecting their loads right outside. You’re paying for the idea of an authentic landmark, but it’s outdated and not as attractive as the photos make it look. If you expect nostalgic accommodation where you can get a restful night, I don’t think it’s worth the money.

I had a 30-minute foot massage, followed by an hour on my back, shoulders, and neck. The masseur was experienced and professional, and quickly worked out which areas needed the most attention. I left feeling completely relaxed, and my body felt great. Thank you 😊
