De Chai Colonial Hotel & Spa

It’s an easy walk to the Old City, restaurants, temples, and lots of massage spots. The night markets take about a 10-20 minute walk, close enough to reach easily but far enough away to miss the late noise and crowds. At De Chai The Colonial Hotel & Spa, our room was clean, comfortable, and well looked after. The layout was nice and simple, the bed was comfortable, and housekeeping kept things in good order. The view was somewhat limited and partly obscured, but it didn’t affect our comfort. The staff were attentive and caring, and it felt like they meant it rather than just going through the motions. Breakfast had a good range, though the coffee was a little weak. A well-located Chiang Mai hotel with clean rooms and consistently strong service.

The hotel itself is beautiful and functional, and having a restaurant and bar area is a real plus, with good space to hang out outside the rooms. Breakfast was okay, the attendants were great, and it ran from 6:30-10 am. The on-site spa looked nice but pricey. We had a two-bedroom unit for four people, but there was only one bathroom and almost no shared living space, just a very narrow strip between the rooms. The bay-window seats were nice, though the tiny side tables weren’t. The low bed was comfortable, but the thin table wasn’t. There was nowhere to hang anything in the rooms, and even the small closet was outside. It seemed like the whole unit was against having hooks. The bathroom was set between the bedrooms, well appointed and laid out with two sinks, a separate toilet, and a separate shower, all in one room. There were no partition doors, so two people couldn’t use it privately. We also found the walls were almost paper thin when it came to light. If the bathroom light was left on, it lit up both bedrooms, so light-sensitive sleepers should know that someone using it at night will make the rooms glow. Each bedroom had a 40-inch Samsung TV. There were two robes, a safe, and two pairs of slippers, though we’d booked for four. Four days weren’t the most comfortable, but manageable. We’ve stayed in plenty of hotels and can be particular, so I’ve tried to stick to the details.

They were so kind to our 18-month-old son, and helped us arrange a private driver, excursions, and taxis. The laundry service was amazing too, thank you so much! The hotel was VERY clean and well kept, with a great breakfast, friendly staff, and a great location. Can’t fault it!

The bedrooms were big but basic, and our window looked onto someone’s backyard and house, so we had to keep the blinds shut the whole time. Breakfast had limited options but was decent, and the staff were very friendly. The pool was small and average, though you don’t come to Chiang Mai to spend your time by the pool. We stayed at De Chai Colonial last week. It’s convenient and in a great location, walkable to everything. I’d definitely recommend it for that reason.
