PaDaet local market is only a five-minute walk around the corner, with cheap food, a pharmacy, 7-Eleven and beer. Rice fields, little temples and the river are nearby too if you feel like wandering. The place is about 5 km south of the Night Bazar, but it's an easy ten-minute scooter ride up the quiet riverside road to town. Scooters and bicycles are available to rent, so it's ideal if you have wheels. If you don't need to stay beside the usual tourist spots, this is a great fit. Despite the bargain price, the Thai/French owners clearly care about the guest experience. They do the work themselves, including cleaning and laundry, and the bedding is washed every day. Everything was spotless. They even built most of the place themselves after struggling to find builders who could finish it to this standard. The service was A1, facilities excellent for the price, decor tasteful and functional, furniture sturdy, beds firm, linen crisp and spotless, cleanliness faultless, security very good, and parking ample. I've stayed twice this year and booked again for next year with friends and family. Highly recommended. It was also clear to me that the negative review below by "A Rankin" was bunkum. I was there when the owners found that he had checked out, taken the contents of his room, and left an unpaid bill. There was an occasional motorbike or dog, but for a street in Thailand it was really quiet.

The French-Thai couple running the hotel were so accommodating and helpful. They recommended Ekkanak, about 2 km away, and we loved it. The food was delicious and very good value, with Pad Thai at 40 THB. Ask them for restaurant suggestions. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and clean, with a big shower, comfortable bed, flatscreen TV, fridge, closet and outdoor storage area. The minibar was a bargain, with some items even cheaper than 7Eleven. They cleaned the room every day and included a simple breakfast. It's a quiet area with a real Thai feel, though roughly a 20-minute scooter ride from the city center toward the airport. A scooter is handy for exploring Chiang Mai, and they rent brand new ones for 200THB/day. If you'd rather not ride, they can take you to the city center in a large van for 200THB, which is easy to split among a group. This was one of our favorite stays on our Asia trip.

I stayed at Happy House in chiang mai for a week, from 7 December to 13 December. It's a clean, safe place with a very good room, TV and air conditioning. The area is small and quiet, and you're not far from the center. You can rent a motorbike to visit lots of places. The owner is French and very friendly, and his Thai wife is a very good person too. I'd recommend this hotel.
