As a local, I remember staying here often years ago, when it was Sanae Chan Guesthouse and run by an old Singaporean Chinese owner. It was later sold and renamed Mali. Now it seems to have dropped the Mali name in favor of a Thai name. The Mali sign is gone from the main river road, and the main sign at the guesthouse no longer says Mali either. There are 16 rooms in a fantastic location, and you can walk everywhere. Prices are competitive, there’s a tiny convenience shop across the street, and there’s a front room where you can relax outside your bedroom.

I come back here every time I visit Chiang Saen because the rooms are so cheap. If atmosphere isn’t a priority and you mainly want affordability, I’d recommend it. A room for two is just 400 baht, or 600 baht for three people. That’s very cheap. It’s a short walk to the Mekong River, and bicycles are available. There are two staff members: one is polite and provides good service, while the other is the complete opposite. 😔😔
