Koh Chang Hut Hotel

Worst hotel I’ve ever been to. The woman at reception was rude from the start. We arrived before check-in and asked to use the toilet, but she sent us to the restaurant across the road. We later learned there are public toilets in the lobby. The room was basic and smelled of mold. At night there were lots of ants in the shower, and the blanket was far too small for two people. The location is fine if you want touristy bars and restaurants, but at low season the beach was grey, with lots of hotel sewage running into it. The moment we decided to check out early came when we asked for more toilet paper at 8am. We’d been given just one small roll the day before, and there was no other tissue in the room. We were told to wait until the afternoon, when room service would come through. When I said we needed it then to use the toilet, they said to wait and maybe someone could bring it at 10am. After I asked, and then firmly begged, she hung up on me. A few minutes later someone arrived with the essentials. It might be a low price per night, but it’s a very high price for ruining your day.

We left after just one night, even though we’d paid for two. The room smelled strongly of mold, there were ants all over the shower and sink, and the bed was really uncomfortable. The owner was rude, too. Before check-in, we had to leave our bags in the lobby despite the place being nearly empty and some rooms being ready. I understand not letting us check in early, but when we asked to use the restroom, she sent us to the restaurant across the street even though the lobby had toilets. We got one small roll of toilet paper in the room, and it ran out that evening. The next morning, when I was on the toilet with nothing to use, the owner said housekeeping would bring more in the afternoon. We had to keep asking before she finally called them. We also rented a bike from her, and it felt dangerous. The brakes were bad and the seat cover didn’t close properly. If you’re visiting White Sand Beach, do yourself a favor and avoid Kho Chang Hut.

The terrace on the cliff, with its ocean views and beautiful sunsets, was a highlight for me. I also liked being able to reach my room by an outside staircase when reception was closed or when I didn’t feel like going through the lobby. I stayed in a 400B fan room, which was huge and nicely furnished with wooden chairs, a desk, and a wardrobe. It had a private balcony and a sliding screen door to keep bugs out. The room was cleaned well every day. Staff were helpful and communicated well in English. For the price, it’s the best value hotel on White Beach. I’d definitely stay here again when I’m on Koh Chang.

The hotel’s craftsmanship is easy to notice, and the ocean-view rooms are beautiful for only 700 baht a night. I got a great sunset every evening. The location worked well for me, though the water was a bit rough while I was there, so I ended up going to Lonely Beach a lot. You’ll need a bike.
