Avatara Resort

I wanted to give this more stars, but the way our stay ended left a bad impression. Two of us were heading to the pier when an older man in staff clothing told us the public transport, normally 30 baht per person, wouldn’t arrive for an hour. We know that wasn’t true. He suggested a private ride for 200 baht instead. We travel to these islands often and know the usual fares. He stayed with us while we tried to stop a few cars, but none stopped or spoke to us. We walked away from the reception area, and soon another car agreed to take us to the pier at the normal price. It felt uncomfortable and unnecessary, especially from someone associated with the hotel. The hotel was clean, housekeeping was very efficient, and the food was pretty good. Most staff were friendly and the service during the stay was pleasant. There are a lot of stairs to the rooms, and the air conditioning can’t be adjusted. My room was far too cold, while my friend’s was quite warm. Given the experience, I don’t think I’d return.

The beach is clean and really nice, with a pleasant bar and restaurant, especially the evening fire performance. There are more decent restaurants and bars within walking distance on either side. Breakfast was so-so, and one night was enough for us. For almost the same price, there are better resorts in a better spot. Our stay was 24 to 25 January. The room was a long walk up the slopes, and the gardens around the room blocks weren’t maintained. The walls between rooms are so thin we could hear the neighbors talking. There were no slippers in the room, and the shower water swung between too hot and too cold, so you had to be careful. The resort needs better upkeep.

The beach is lovely, the town is walkable, and you can get taxis too. Staff were pleasant and welcoming when I arrived. Breakfast was okay, nothing special. Bring mosquito repellent, you’ll definitely need it. The main problem is the hotel’s position on the side and top of a hill. Reaching the rooms means lots of uphill walking and stairs. If you have mobility issues, a disability, or leg or back injuries, this place isn’t suitable and you’ll struggle to get around. I’d look for somewhere on flat ground. There are no sunbeds on the beach unless you walk elsewhere to hire them, and only a few chairs at the end of the bar.

The staff were amazing, helpful, and the hotel itself is stunning. It faces one of the island’s most beautiful beaches. I highly recommend staying here and having dinner at the hotel by the sea. We’ll definitely be back ❤️
