The Earth House

A little bamboo hut, a fan, and a mosquito net were all I really needed, and this turned out to be the best place I stayed in Thailand. The showers are cold, which feels great after a hot day. I even had to turn the fan down. We lost power for one whole night, and I worried I wouldn’t sleep without the fan, but an open window brought in a nice breeze and I had probably my best night’s sleep. The huts are amazingly 99% waterproof, and watching a storm from there was a unique experience. This was exactly what I wanted from Koh Tao, a chance to really get away from it all.

For a month, The Earth House was my home in Koh Tao, and I can’t recommend it enough. The bamboo hut was cozy, surrounded by lush vegetation, and made me feel like I was living in the jungle while still having the modern comforts I needed. The WiFi was excellent with a strong signal even at the farthest hut. There was free coffee and drinking water, a great bar, and the loveliest people. It’s also in a fantastic central location. Thanks for such a great stay. I’ll definitely be back.

The road beside Earth House gets really loud, pretty much from 5:30am to 11:30pm, so you'll need to plan around the noise if you want to sleep. We also found all sorts of bugs and little critters in the room. I personally didn't mind, though I know some people would feel squeamish, and the name "Earth House" does seem fitting. After a few nights, we found a bed bug in the mosquito net. I gave it 2 stars because the place itself isn't bad, and, honestly, bed bugs probably turn up in a lot of places in Thailand.

The bar downstairs played music I wasn't keen on, though thankfully it didn't go too late. It's a lovely place, and having your own room or bungalow gives you privacy. I get a bit squeamish around geckos, so it depends on whether things like that bother you.
