Chai Lai Orchid

Worachit and Somchai, a father and son, were the reason the Jungle Wisdom Trek became a highlight of our Thailand trip. They were friendly and passionate, and shared their knowledge of the jungle and Karen culture in a way that was easy to follow. They showed us how to make all sorts of useful things from bamboo, including cups, spoons, a hat, and other utensils, using simple traditional methods. They also taught us about bush medicine, medicinal plants, and how Karen people have lived with the forest for generations. After a morning of hiking and learning, the fresh meal they cooked over an open fire was delicious and filling. The waterfalls, scenery, and hands-on parts were great, but their enthusiasm and care made the day special. If you’re at Chai Lai Orchid, we highly recommend the Jungle Wisdom Trek. Ask for Worachit and Somchai if you can. You’ll leave with a full stomach, more appreciation for the jungle, and lasting memories.

Our guide *Hua* made the tour at Ban Lan Dao Resort such a good experience. He took his time explaining things clearly, shared lots of interesting information about the elephants and their care, and you could feel how much respect and love the animals receive. He even offered to take photos, which I appreciated. On the hike, he kept an eye on my safety and gave useful advice, especially by the waterfall where it was easy to slip. He also told me about the elephant breakfast experience, which sounds amazing and shows how much effort the company puts into its tours. I’d book again, and when I return to Thailand with my family, I’ll ask for Hua. Highly recommended.

The hike was a real adventure, not one of those outings that barely feels like a hike. It was hot, there were bugs, and you need to be ready for the elements, but I loved it and would do it again. My guide knew a lot about pretty much anything I asked. I did the two-day experience and stayed in a Karen home. The family were welcoming and kind, and cooked dinner and breakfast. The curry at dinner might be one of the best I’ve had. My A-frame was clean and cute. There was no air conditioning, but even in the heat, the fan kept me comfortable. It’s more of a lodge, so set your expectations accordingly. This sanctuary is the best. The elephants are rescues, are treated well, and have lots of space to roam. You get so much time with them, and you can feel the care they receive.

The best part for me was being with the kind, happy people in the Karen Tribe Villages along such a scenic route. Through the Khun Poi package, we tried distinctive Karen tribe foods and cooking methods, then relaxed around the waterfalls. People taught us about medicines and ways to use plants, trees, and other things found in nature. The elephant experiences were great too, and our guide helped us take photos. The village is beautiful, both in how it looks and in the feeling you get from the people’s kindness. This was an exceptional experience with some of the best people I met in Thailand. I hope to come back again and again. Photos still can’t show how beautiful it is or how special the visit was.
