I made good use of the free bicycles and could get to everything in Phrae within minutes. Even on foot, the sights and things to do are only about a 10-minute walk away. The homestay sits outside the city centre along a road bordered by rice and corn fields, so the air feels cleaner and it’s a few degrees cooler. It’s a quaint spot, though I only spent one night there in October and wish I’d stayed longer. My private room cost just 150 baht a night and came with its own bathroom. It was small, but had a big bed, nice pillows, and a good fan, which was all I needed. There was a sit-down toilet and hot shower, and the bathroom was above par by Thai standards. Guests can also use the kitchen, beside a large covered outdoor seating area. I had a 6am bus the next day, so the free coffee was handy. The owner even took me to the bus station on his scooter. With a friendly owner, a great room and such a good price, I couldn’t ask for more. I’ll definitely stay here next time I’m in Phrae.

Shayanon was always nearby to help, and he’s a hardworking man with a big heart. I stayed in this lovely home for two nights and really enjoyed it. The room rate is very reasonable, and the beds are large, clean, and comfortable. Towels and water were provided, and tea or coffee, bananas, and coconut came as complimentary extras. There are several rooms, all with double beds and mosquito nets. The house also has a big garden. He offers free bikes for cycling, and you can rent a motorcycle on site. If you want to get to know Shayanon and Phrae, I recommend this budget place. Thanks for the hospitality.

I went to Young Ma on a Saturday afternoon in September hoping to get a room. I walked around the juckyar, I mean premises, for half an hour calling out “sabadee!” and eventually gave up and left. The place has an eclectic cowboy theme, so I’d guess the person who lives there is pretty interesting. I just wish they’d been around when I showed up. Then again, it’s their home, and people do leave their homes sometimes, I know, I know.
