We rented a villa for two months with friends, and the problems turned what should have been a vacation into a long ordeal. We visited a week and a half before moving in and met a friendly owner and his agent. There were already issues, including a loose pool tile and a fifth room under renovation. The owner promised to fix everything before our arrival, since there were ten of us and we needed that room. We paid a deposit. When we moved in, none of it had been fixed. The owner chose to take extra rent instead of keeping his promises, and he didn't come to meet us, only the agent did. It was New Year's Eve and we'd run out of other options, so we had to accept the villa. One couple had to stay in a hotel, and the pool was still broken. The appliances failed one after another. At check-in, I asked how to use the washing machine, but everyone avoided answering. We found out the next day that it didn't work. A couple of days later the dishwasher broke, then the refrigerator the day after that, and then the stove. Repairs took weeks. The dishwasher was installed in the garage. Communication with the owner was another problem. He wouldn't speak to us directly, so we had to message his agent and have her relay things to him. He also didn't show up at checkout, despite promising he would. Through the agent, he rudely said he didn't want to rent the villa to us at all. The utility charges also felt deceptive. The contract rate was 9 tonnes per kilowatt-hour, double the island average of 4.5. We missed that at first. The owner also doubled the water bill, saying he brought the water himself, but we never saw that happen and hadn't been warned. We paid over 61,000 THB for water and electricity over two months. Although the contract said utilities would be paid in baht, he quietly charged us $200, which worked out to 5,000 THB more at the exchange rate. There was construction outside every day from 8 a.m., too. Between that, the broken equipment, and everything else, I wouldn't recommend spending your vacation here. The place wasn't worth the money or stress.
