Oh Dee Hostel

I stayed here about four years ago on my first visit to Sangkhlaburi. I’d booked a joining bunk bed room, but ended up with the room to myself. Nice vibes for a small town, and the coffee was good too.

I’m really angry about the money I spent here. This was my worst experience in Thailand, and elsewhere too. At checkout there wasn’t even a thank you or half a smile. The room was awful for the price. I paid about 27€, around 1000bt depending on the exchange, for a private room for two that wasn’t worth 400bt. Agoda’s room page didn’t say the bathroom/wc was shared, which was the first surprise. I thought maybe the room itself would be great, but it had holes in the windows, floor and walls, and the sheets and pillows were covered in stains. There was no sign of service. The only good thing was the air conditioner, though the room felt like an oven when we first walked in. I had to battle a dozen mosquitos just to shower or use the wc. A cat came in during the afternoon to visit and play, and it wasn’t easy to get him back out. At night, cats meowed and tried to get in, dogs barked in the street, and very early in the morning they lifted the shutters with a lot of noise. Closing them in the evening was just as loud. It felt like trying to sleep in an animal shop. Proofs in the pics.

The room was very clean, and the shared areas were nice, all western style. The location is good, near the nightmarket and about a 15 minute walk from the mon bridge. But it’s very expensive for what you get. Breakfast included just means coffee and toast. I paid 40thb for a cup of coffee and had to clean up afterward. The staff seemed lazy, paying more attention to the mirror and their selfphone than to customers.

You can relax on the first floor, and it’s only about a two-minute walk to the market and bus from the hostel. The hostel itself is really nice, and the staff are kind and friendly.
