A room with a fan for 250 baht isn’t necessarily bad, but if they’re still operating, they should work on cleanliness, repair broken or unusable equipment, and especially improve the staff’s service. I hurried out in the morning to check out and get to the Suan Khon Nayok Museum so I could leave town quickly. At reception, the person coming on shift asked why I hadn’t been moved, since the fan wasn’t working and another good room was available. That was a pretty awful thing to hear after the night I’d had. The first room came with a large cockroach. When I asked to move, the response was completely indifferent, as if cockroaches were just normal visitors. In the new room, the fan was on setting 5 but seemed to turn about two blades per minute. It was raining, so I put up with it while staring at cobwebs on the ceiling. I was worried I’d get the same response if I asked to change rooms again.

The building itself seems solid, and the central location is handy, within walking distance of both a market and a convenience store. With renovations, I think the hotel could be transformed, and I hope they keep trying. It’s an old, established hotel on a corner in the center of Sawankhalok City, near government and educational institutions. The street-facing facade looks modern, bold, and stately, but the interior clearly shows its age. There was no refrigerator, and the amenities were generally poor. The reception staff were unfriendly. Even allowing for this being a regional city, I felt they could do more to satisfy guests.
