Sangthong Heritage

It feels more like staying with a host family in an authentic colonial-style house than in a boutique hotel. The house is in the heart of town, opposite Phrathat Phanom temple. The welcome was lovely, and the service was caring.

I love this quaint hotel near Pra That Phanom temple. The third-generation female owner manages it, and I liked being a small part of their history. She was extremely helpful and speaks fluent English. They had my favorite dish, Lao-style chicken noodle soup. When your belly is happy, your heart sings.

The staff were so kind and polite. I had a bit of an argument with the manager. She misunderstood me, though I understand. I felt uncomfortable staying here and don’t want to come back.

I booked because I was told at check-in that the room would be quiet and breakfast would include fresh coffee. Instead, the room was small, faced a courtyard, and was very noisy. There was loud noise until midnight, then staff were making a racket at 6am while preparing breakfast. The breakfast was only two-star quality and not very good, and there was no fresh coffee. The instant powdered coffee was very bad, not what you’d expect at a hotel charging this price and claiming that standard. They said I’d have to pay extra for coffee with breakfast. I wasn’t impressed with management, and felt the owner hadn’t been honest when I booked. The hotel is in a nice location and I liked the historic building, but it was overpriced for its condition and service. Other hotels nearby are in much better shape and offer better breakfast for less. I stayed one night, and it was disappointing. I’d had only positive experiences while traveling around Thailand for many weeks, and wouldn’t recommend this hotel.
