Hôtel Métropole Résidence

We walked about 20 minutes from Barcelona metro station. The location was perfect for getting around on foot, at the end of a quiet road. I was a woman out at 9:30 p.m. and felt safe, so don't let the quiet at night put you off. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The shower area needs maintenance: water flooded it badly because of the drainage, and a glass door would be better than the curtain. Breakfast changed each day, with eggs prepared differently while bread, coffee, and cake stayed the same. That variety was nice. They could cut back on packaged cake or offer Tunisian sweets, and give guests a choice of tea or coffee. It would also be good to choose whether breakfast is included in the room price, since not everyone wants it. Wahid, the breakfast servers, and housekeeping were friendly, helpful, and accommodating. One day I needed an early breakfast, and staff packed boiled eggs and a sandwich for me to take along. The main downside was Wi-Fi: in my room 305 the connection was poor and kept dropping. We stayed seven nights and got very good value for the money. The hotel is right in central Tunis, tucked off the main road, quiet most of the time, especially at night, and felt very safe. Our taxi driver found it easily after sunset. Shops of different sizes, attractions, transport hubs, the Central market, and Ziatoune Mosque via the street stalls are all within a walk of about 5 to 15 minutes. Our clean, spacious second-floor room had two comfortable beds and was reasonably well equipped for the price. There is no lift. The en-suite was a good size, with hot water and a working shower. Air conditioning worked very well, and there was heating too, though we didn't need it. Plenty of lights and sockets. Wi-Fi was strong. The TV had only a few Arabic channels, and I would have liked at least one in English. There was no kettle or fridge, but staff gave us hot water when we needed it. The room was cleaned daily, with towels and toiletries replaced, beds made, and the floor cleaned. Extra pillows, duvets, and hangers were in the mirrored wardrobe. Breakfast was basic and much appreciated, but nearly the same every day, with coffee and milk served warm rather than hot. A little more variety would help. Only the manager and one other staff member spoke English. Still, everyone was pleasant, friendly, and very helpful, and reception was staffed around the clock. I'd recommend the hotel and stay again.

The staff were the highlight, especially the receptionist, who was so sweet and helpful. Breakfast was simple but good, with fresh orange juice each morning. We stayed about a week and had a great time. The hotel is tucked away, yet very central, within walking distance of sights, shops, and restaurants. Our room was cozy, clean, and had what we needed. Since it was winter, I was especially glad there was a heater, which isn't always common in other Mediterranean countries. There seemed to be air conditioning as well.

A basic hotel, but clean, with a nice breakfast and a great spot near the medina.
